Cell Therapy
Cell Therapy
Cellular therapy (CT) is one of the most efficient healing modalities available
today. It consists of transplantation of human cells (usually stem cells of different
origin) to replace or repair the damaged cells or tissues. Patients with a growing number of
chronic, autoimmune and degenerative diseases benefit from this innovative technology. At
Santa Maria, we offer autologous cell therapy (ACT) with patient's own mesenchymal stem
cells, as well as precision platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) injections for treating a variety of
conditions.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine,
consisting of injection of patient's blood plasma enriched with platelets,
or thrombocytes. Platelet aggregation plays an important role in natural
immune system defense, as platelets release a large number of growth factors
stimulating immune system. The platelets are prepared from the whole blood
centrifugated at low speed in order to separate plasma from the blood cells.
The fraction of platelets is usually enriched with leucocytes (white blood
cells) for additional effect. Typically, the injections are made into
joints, ligaments and muscles. Growth factors released by platelets induce
autologous adult stem cells and help to regenerate the damaged tissues.
Microinjections of PRP in face and skin induce skin regeneration and
rejuvenation.
Benefits:
Benefits:
- Restoration of damaged joints, ligaments and muscles
- Regeneration of cartilage tissue
- Reduction of chronic pain in joints and muscles
- Skin tissues rejuvenation
There are many kinds of stem cells, with different potency of development
into different mature cell types and different profiles of treated diseases
and side effects. One of the safest and most efficient types of stem cells
is called autologous mesenchymal cells.
Autologous means that these cells derive from the patient's own body, usually adipose tissue or bone marrow. Therefore, these autologous stem cells do not cause autoimmune reaction and can easily grow in the body after terminal differentiation.
Mesenchymal means that these cells derive from mesenchyme, embryonic connective tissue. As such, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent, i.e. they have potential to differentiate into many types of mature adult cells in multiple organs and tissues. MSCs can replicate as undifferentiated cells for a long time and potentially develop into many cell types of mesenchymal lineage, such as bone, cartilage, adipose, neural and hematopoietic cells. MSCs are found in many organs and tissues, such as adult marrow, adipose tissue and intestinal layers.
Multipotency, safety and lack of autoimmune reaction make autonomous MSCs one of most efficient and popular tools in cell therapy. Importantly, they are relatively easy to extract from adipose tissue or bone marrow. With modern lab methods, the whole process of extraction, preparation and administration takes about 4 hours for most indications.
